Weekly Update 9-24-2007

Posted September 24th, 2007

Exhilaration flowed from the circle of individuals that participated along side the Global Mala Project here on Saturday morning. The workshop for peace and awareness consisting of 108 sun salutations lead by Erin was more then just a success it was inspiring. Thank you to all that came and participated! It was a great way to end the week and a bright start for the fall season.

Tuesday night after dinner will be the garden party with Carissa out at the Secret Garden, there will be a fire circle and garden goodies celebrating our summer harvest along with some information shared on the upcoming garden plans for the winter. Oyster Mushrooms have been spotted on the Mushroom Logs and we’re waiting in anticipation to see if that project turns out some tasty treats for the kitchen!

Keep your fingers crossed! Sweat Lodge is Wednesday and there are still a few spots available for those that are interested. Reservations should be made for Tuesday to participate in the Lodge on Wednesday. Also in the works is our annual Halloween Party, happening this year the weekend after Oct. 31 on Saturday Nov. 3.

Hope to see you soon, until then…..

Weekly Update 9-17- 2007

Posted September 18th, 2007

The wind is blowing, the trees are swaying and an occasional sweater is already being wore in the forest – the Autumnal Equinox will be celebrated this weekend in conjunction with the Global Mala Project happening this Friday and Saturday in the Glass House.

Helping hands are around every corner and a burst of fresh ideas, energy and togetherness are making us look forward to the colder days ahead! Pantry shelves and hidden spaces are making room for living sprouts and fermented yumminess, the delicious smells coming from the kitchen flow out the windows into the air and fill our tummies with anticipation for the tasty evening meals!

The summer heat and garden weeds are making way for cooler breezes and the fall seeds in the garden are being sown. We will also be hosting a garden party in our Secret Garden in celebration of the end of the summer harvesting season. Observing the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, we will gather together to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon and celebrate the abundance of the summer’s harvest.

We enjoy living in our beautiful community and we are thankful for the bounty of our Mother Earth so join us in giving thanks and come celebrate with us on Tuesday, September 25th.

Hope to see you soon, until then…..

Bang !

Posted September 10th, 2007

The week started with a bang! Literally. The sound of the ceiling plaster falling to the ground in the Hostel’s dome library startled many early Monday night. Fortunately nobody was hurt, but decisions were made to start packing up the books and move the staff out of the dome. Thankfully plans for a new dome have been in the works and temporary housing for the staff was not a hard decision. During the week with the help of Murray, Chad, and the amazing Hostel staff, four beautifully spacious rooms were constructed in the corral. Sadly the library doors will have to be closed for safety reasons, but the library books have migrated to other useful spaces and can continue being read and enjoyed by staff and guests.

We also had to say goodbye to more hostel family. Chuck’s time here with us for now has come to an end, like Hanoch, he too had to return to the world of alarm clocks and pay checks, but like so many that come and go through here their spirit stays with us. Lessons learned will also stay with us, Chuck’s enthusiasm on educating people about plastic pollution and toxins was motivational. Though the changes made during his stay may seem small to guests passing through, the hostel will be better for it, and we will continue to reach goals that were inspired by him.

With so much going on here this week and with his warm disposition our new arrival could have easily slipped his way right into the hostel groove without us noticing if it wasn’t for the amazing hostel meals he’s been cooking up every night! His degree in dietetics, creative use of organic whole foods mixed with traditional styles, and positive energy in the kitchen haven’t been missed in eating his dinners! We all feel blessed with Trey’s arrival and are all excited to watch the kitchen come alive under his management!

Mind, Body and Spirit

Posted September 5th, 2007

The Mind Body Spirit retreat began at the strike of lightning, Friday evening, and concluded with the soothing breeze, Monday afternoon. A delightful array of individuals gathered here at the Hostel, many for their first time. Moments were experienced exchanging knowledge, sharing empowering stories, and forming inspiring connections as we explored concepts of mind body spirit well being. Workshop topics included poi, yoga and meditation, sprouted and fermented foods, dance, and stained glass. The weekend was filled with countless aha! moments and joyous laughter. We are grateful for each and every one who played a role in the retreat’s success.

Scattered rain over the course of a handful of days and nights was received gratefully by all at the Hostel. The rain encouraged the heavy heat to give way to gentler weather, while partially quenching the Forest’s thirst. More please!

The equestrian photography world has summoned Hanoch from the forest. His final (for now) construction project was an awning addition to the hidey hole. We will miss his way with words, carpentry and fix-it contributions to the Hostel, play with fire, and passion. It is suspected that he will return soonish, albeit briefly, here and there amongst his travels.

The dinner bell tolls.
