The Hostel in the Forest, located in Brunswick, Georgia, USA, is a center that promotes and teaches environmental sustainability, while also serving as a spiritual retreat for its members. It teaches a hands-on approach to a sustainable lifestyle through activities and workshops such as alternative building and organic gardening while complementing the processes of nature. While the Hostel is not dedicated to any particular religion or denomination, its educational programs and services are designed to integrate the ecological, social, spiritual, economic, and emotional aspects of the human condition.

The Hostel in the Forest has been in operation since 1975. Over the past 50 years it has provided a collaborative space for people to exchange ideas that support our mission. In the early days we were a part of the International Youth Hostel Federation and American Youth Hostel Association, open to members at a discounted rate. We have since established our own membership organization. Anyone may become a member of The Hostel irrespective of race, religion, or country of origin. We collect a one-time nominal $10 fee for a lifetime membership.

Every member has access to the facilities while they are at The Hostel. These facilities include:

Membership allows you to enjoy the many benefits of The Hostel. However, membership is not a one-way arrangement. The board of directors and manager feel strongly that each member should find a way to contribute to The Hostel as well. On the most fundamental level, member contributions may consist of completing a daily chore, or perhaps sharing a skillset or attribute that betters The Hostel as a whole. During our 50 years of operation, members have volunteered thousands of hours in building, repairing, and nurturing this unique place. While we make no specific requests of our members, we are always in need of helping hands. This spirit of generosity forms the foundation of The Hostel, and each and every member benefits from this collaboration. The Hostel does not and never has attempted to profit in financial terms, but rather in the mutual sharing of knowledge and wisdom.
Please note, The Hostel membership agreement can be changed or altered at any time by consensus of the board of directors and is not a legally binding contract between the Hostel and its members. Any member may have their membership revoked by the officers of The Hostel or by the manager or a representative of those officer, at any time.
