Creating Ritual for Effective Ecotherapy! Dec.10-12 2021

This three day training is for therapists, outdoor education specialists, healers, and those who wish to implement the use of therapeutic ritual in their professional or personal lives. It will be hosted at the Hostel in the Forest in Brunswick Georgia, and facilitated by Papillon DeBoer (they/them), Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. Participants will learn basic categories and functions of ritual, from a multicultural and anti-appropriative perspective, and practice ethical and therapeutic ritual design, in nature.

The workshop cost is $250 per person, which includes the training, a two night stay at the Hostel in the Forest, two dinners, and two continental breakfasts. Attendees are invited to arrive prior to the 5pm dinner on Friday December 10th, and the opening ritual will lead the weekend directly after dinner clean up. Saturday morning, attendees will learn the following:

  • Cultural misappropriation

  • Evidence for the basis of using ritual therapeutically

  • Basic functions of ritual use

  • How and when ritual can be harmful

  • Basic elements of ritual

  • Four ritual acts of intention

Saturday afternoon, attendees will work together to design a ritual for one or more volunteers, and carry out the ritual in the forest. Sunday morning after breakfast, at 10am, we will conclude the training with a closing ceremony. Attendees may plan to leave as soon as 12pm, or stay and enjoy the forest for the afternoon and evening. Additional nights can be booked with the Hostel in advance for $40 per person per night.

Attendees must bring proof of vaccination for Covid 19, and are encouraged to bring lunch materials, and appropriate gear such as rain jackets and thermal underwear and mittens, given that the weather in the south Georgia forest is unpredictable. We will have the option of indoor wood-heated spaces, but some of the training will be outdoors in the forest.
